Xi’an

Xi’an Travel Guide

The start of the Silk Road and home of the Terracotta Army — the best place in China to understand the country’s imperial past.

Xi’an was the capital of thirteen Chinese dynasties and, for centuries, the eastern end of the Silk Road. Today it is best known for the Terracotta Army, but the city itself is one of the most rewarding stops on any China itinerary.

The old city is compact and enclosed by a complete Ming-era city wall that you can walk or cycle around in a couple of hours. Inside, the Muslim Quarter is a lively grid of food streets with a genuinely distinct culture and cuisine.

Most travellers need two full days: one for the Terracotta Army, one for the city. Adding a third day allows a trip to Mount Hua or the Shaanxi History Museum at a relaxed pace.

Top Things to See and Do

Terracotta Army

Thousands of life-size clay soldiers buried with China’s first emperor. About an hour from the city — go early and book in advance.

City Wall

One of the best-preserved ancient city walls in China. Rent a bicycle and ride the full 14 km loop.

Muslim Quarter

Narrow lanes packed with street food — lamb skewers, flatbreads and sweets. Busiest in the evening.

Big Wild Goose Pagoda

A Tang-dynasty pagoda built to house Buddhist texts brought from India. Surrounded by a large plaza and fountain shows.

Shaanxi History Museum

An excellent, well-organised museum covering the region’s long history. Free entry but requires advance booking.

Mount Hua

A dramatic, steep mountain with plank walkways and cable cars. A long but rewarding day trip.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–October) are the most comfortable. Summers are hot and winters are cold and dry, though the city remains open and pleasant to visit year-round.

Getting There and Around

Xi’an Xianyang International Airport (XIY) handles international and domestic flights, with an airport express train and shuttle buses to the city. Xi’an is a major high-speed rail hub — Beijing is around 4.5 hours away, Chengdu around 3.5 hours, and Shanghai around 6 hours. The metro covers most sights, and the old city is walkable.
