Chongqing is one of the most visually striking cities in China. Built across steep hills at the meeting point of two rivers, it stacks roads, buildings and railways on multiple levels, and is best known for its neon night skyline.
It is also the main departure point for Yangtze River cruises through the Three Gorges, which makes it a natural stop on a route between Chengdu and eastern China.
Allow two days for the city. Add three or four if you are taking a river cruise downstream.

Best Time to Visit
Chongqing is known as one of China’s “furnace” cities — summers are very hot and humid. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are far more comfortable, and winter is mild but grey and damp.
Getting There and Around
Jiangbei International Airport (CKG) serves international and domestic routes. The metro is extensive, though the city’s terrain makes it unusual — expect long escalators and steep walks. High-speed trains reach Chengdu in about 1.5 hours, and river cruises depart from the Chaotianmen area.
