Karst peaks, river scenery and rice terraces — the landscape that has appeared on Chinese paintings for centuries.
Guilin and the surrounding Guangxi region are home to some of the most photographed scenery in China. Limestone karst peaks rise out of the flat river plain, and the Li River between Guilin and Yangshuo is the classic way to see them.
Most travellers spend one night in Guilin itself and two or three nights in Yangshuo, which is smaller, more relaxed and set among the peaks. The Longji Rice Terraces, a few hours north, are a worthwhile addition.
Plan on three days as a minimum, more if you want to cycle, hike and take your time.

Li River Cruise
The classic four-hour boat trip from Guilin to Yangshuo, passing the most famous karst formations.
Yangshuo Countryside
Rent a bike or scooter and ride among the peaks, rice fields and small villages.
Longji Rice Terraces
Terraced hillsides built over centuries, with traditional villages and walking routes between them.
Reed Flute Cave
A large limestone cave in Guilin with colourful lighting and dramatic rock formations.
Elephant Trunk Hill
Guilin’s city symbol — a hill shaped like an elephant drinking from the river.
Xingping Ancient Town
A quiet old town on the Li River with the viewpoint used on the back of the 20-yuan note.
Best Time to Visit
April to October is the main season, with warm weather and green landscapes. The rice terraces are flooded and reflective in late spring and golden in early autumn. Summers are hot and wet, and winter is cool and often misty — atmospheric, but cold on the river.
Getting There and Around
Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL) has domestic and some regional international flights. High-speed rail connects Guilin to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and other southern cities. Buses and trains run frequently between Guilin and Yangshuo, and the Li River cruise is a popular one-way option.
