Xiamen Travel Guide
A relaxed coastal city with a car-free island, colonial architecture and excellent seafood.
Xiamen is one of China’s most liveable coastal cities, sitting on the Fujian coast facing Taiwan. It combines a modern waterfront with historic districts, and it is best known for Gulangyu — a small, car-free island just offshore.
Gulangyu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with colonial-era villas, narrow lanes and viewpoints over the harbour. It is very popular, so plan to visit early in the day or stay overnight on the island.
Two days covers the city and the island comfortably. Many travellers also use Xiamen as a base for visiting the Fujian tulou — the remarkable circular earth buildings inland.

Gulangyu Island
Car-free island of historic villas, gardens and viewpoints. Ferries book up — reserve in advance.
Nanputuo Temple
A large working Buddhist temple at the foot of a wooded hill, with walking trails behind it.
Zengcuoan Village
A former fishing village turned creative quarter, full of small cafés, guesthouses and street food.
Island Ring Road
A coastal road and boardwalk with beaches and sea views. Good for cycling.
Zhongshan Road
The historic shopping street, with arcaded buildings and plenty of local snacks.
Fujian Tulou
Circular communal earth buildings in the countryside, a few hours away. Usually done as a day tour.
Best Time to Visit
March to May and September to November are the most pleasant, with mild temperatures and less rain. Summers are hot and humid, and the coast can be affected by typhoons between July and September.
Getting There and Around
Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (XMN) is close to the city and well connected. High-speed rail links Xiamen to Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hangzhou and Shanghai. The metro and BRT are efficient, and ferries to Gulangyu depart from two piers — international visitors normally use the passenger pier and should book tickets in advance.
