Shanghai

Shanghai Travel Guide

China’s most international city — a striking skyline, elegant colonial-era streets, and the country’s most cosmopolitan food scene.

Shanghai is the easiest introduction to China for many first-time visitors. It is fast, modern and comparatively easy to navigate, with a walkable historic core and excellent public transport.

The city’s appeal lies in the contrast between the two sides of the Huangpu River: the colonial architecture of the Bund on one bank, and the futuristic towers of Pudong on the other. Add the leafy former French Concession, excellent museums, and some of Asia’s best restaurants, and it is a city that rewards a slower pace.

Two to three days covers the essentials. Many travellers also use Shanghai as a base for day trips to water towns such as Zhujiajiao.

Top Things to See and Do

The Bund

The riverside promenade with the city’s best skyline view. Visit at dusk, when the Pudong towers light up.

Yu Garden

A classical Ming-era garden in the old city, surrounded by a busy market area. Go early to avoid crowds.

Former French Concession

Tree-lined streets, art deco villas, independent cafés and boutique shops. Best explored on foot.

Shanghai Tower

One of the world’s tallest buildings, with an observation deck on the 118th floor. Book a clear day.

Shanghai Museum

A strong collection of Chinese bronze, ceramics and calligraphy. Free entry, central location on People’s Square.

Zhujiajiao Water Town

Canals, stone bridges and old lanes about an hour from the city. An easy day trip by metro and bus.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the most pleasant seasons. Summers are hot and humid, and winter is chilly and damp, though both are manageable with the right clothing.

Getting There and Around

Shanghai has two airports: Pudong (PVG) for most international flights and Hongqiao (SHA) for domestic routes and some regional international flights. The metro is one of the best in the world — cheap, fast and clearly signed in English. The Maglev connects Pudong Airport to the metro network in about eight minutes.
