Shenzhen Travel Guide
China’s newest major city — a fast, design-led tech hub with coastal parks and a border crossing into Hong Kong.
Shenzhen barely existed fifty years ago. Today it is a city of over seventeen million people, one of China’s wealthiest cities, and the country’s technology and design capital. For visitors, its appeal is different from that of China’s historic cities — it is about contemporary culture, architecture, shopping and the coast.
The city sits directly on the Hong Kong border, which makes it a very convenient stop on a southern China itinerary. High-speed trains run to Hong Kong West Kowloon in under twenty minutes.
One or two days is enough for most travellers, especially as a complement to Guangzhou or Hong Kong.
Top Things to See and Do
OCT Loft
A creative district of galleries, design studios, cafés and small shops in converted factory buildings.
Dafen Oil Painting Village
Hundreds of studios producing and selling paintings, from copies to original work. An unusual, memorable stop.
Huaqiangbei
The world’s largest electronics market. Overwhelming but fascinating if you like technology.
Dameisha Beach
The most accessible beach in the city, reachable by metro. Popular with locals at weekends.
Window of the World
A theme park of miniature world landmarks. Kitschy, but a long-running Shenzhen institution.
Ping An Finance Centre
One of the tallest buildings in China, with an observation deck overlooking the bay.
Best Time to Visit
Shenzhen is subtropical. October to April is the most comfortable window, with mild, dry weather. Summers are hot, humid and wet.
Getting There and Around
Bao’an International Airport (SZX) serves domestic and international routes. The metro is modern, extensive and easy to use. Land border crossings to Hong Kong operate at Futian, Luohu and Shenzhen Bay, and high-speed rail connects to Hong Kong West Kowloon, Guangzhou and the wider national network.
