Yunnan sits in China’s far southwest, bordering Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam. It is the country’s most ethnically diverse province, with over twenty-five minority groups, and its landscape ranges from tropical jungle to snow-capped Himalayan peaks.
For travellers, the classic route runs from Kunming through Dali and Lijiang, then north toward Shangri-La. Each town has a distinct character, and the high-speed rail line between Kunming, Dali and Lijiang makes the route easy to travel independently.
Give Yunnan at least a week. It is a large province and the distances are long, but the rewards are considerable.
Top Things to See and Do
Dali
An old town between mountains and a lake, with a relaxed atmosphere and a strong cafe culture.
Lijiang Old Town
A UNESCO-listed maze of cobbled lanes and waterways. Pretty but busy — go early in the morning.
Shangri-La
A Tibetan town at 3,200 metres with a large monastery and easy access to Ganden Sumtseling.
Tiger Leaping Gorge
One of the deepest gorges in the world, with a well-known two-day hiking trail.
Yuanyang Rice Terraces
Spectacular terraced hillsides, best at sunrise and sunset. Reached via a long but scenic drive.
Kunming
The provincial capital, known for its mild climate, flowers and excellent food markets.
Best Time to Visit
March to May and September to November are the best months, with dry, clear weather. Summer is the rainy season, and winter is cold in the higher towns such as Lijiang and Shangri-La. Altitude is a real consideration in the north — allow time to acclimatise.
Getting There and Around
Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG) is the main gateway, with direct flights from Southeast Asia and major Chinese cities. High-speed rail connects Kunming to Dali and Lijiang, and regional flights and buses reach more remote areas. Independent travel is realistic here, though some places are easier with a driver.
