Hainan is China’s southernmost province: a tropical island roughly the size of Belgium, with palm-lined beaches, warm weather year-round and a growing resort industry. It is where Chinese travellers go for a beach holiday, and it is increasingly popular with international visitors too.
The main resort area is Sanya, at the island’s southern tip, with several distinct bays. Haikou in the north is the provincial capital and the arrival point for many domestic flights and trains.
Hainan also has a notable visa advantage: many nationalities can enter the island visa-free for short stays, which makes it a useful option for a warm-weather break without a full Chinese visa.

Yalong Bay
The most polished resort stretch near Sanya, with calm water and a long white-sand beach.
Dadonghai
A busier, more central beach area with restaurants, bars and easy access to the city.
Wuzhizhou Island
Offshore island popular for snorkelling and diving, reached by boat from near Sanya.

Best Time to Visit
October to April is the peak season, with dry, warm weather — the island is a popular winter escape when northern China is cold. May to September is hot, humid and within the typhoon season, though prices are lower.
Getting There and Around
Sanya Phoenix International (SYX) and Haikou Meilan International (HAK) both handle international and domestic flights. A high-speed rail loop circles the island, connecting the main towns and both airports. Taxis and ride-hailing are widely available in resort areas.
