Beijing to Shanghai: Train or Flight?

Beijing to Shanghai: Train or Flight?

The two main options between China’s biggest cities, compared honestly.

Transportation

Beijing to Shanghai is one of the busiest travel corridors in the world, and the two cities are around 1,200 kilometres apart. You have two good options, and for most travellers the train wins — but not always, and it is worth understanding why.

The Short Answer

Take the train unless the schedule or price strongly favours a flight. Door to door, high-speed rail is usually comparable or faster, considerably less stressful, and drops you in the centre of both cities.

By High-Speed Rail

The Beijing–Shanghai high-speed line is the flagship of the Chinese rail network, running some of the fastest scheduled services in the world.

Details
Journey time Roughly 4.5 hours on the fastest G trains; 5.5–6 hours on slower services with more stops
Departure station Beijing South Railway Station (Beijingnan)
Arrival station Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station
Frequency Very frequent — dozens of departures daily across the day
Classes Second class (standard), first class, business class

The big advantage is where it puts you. Beijing South is on the metro and about 20 minutes from the city centre; Shanghai Hongqiao adjoins the metro and the domestic airport. Both are genuinely convenient.

Station process is quick: security, gate, board. Allow 40–60 minutes at the station before departure, not the two hours an airport requires.

By Air

Details
Flight time Around 2 hours 15 minutes in the air
Beijing airports Capital (PEK) or Daxing (PKX)
Shanghai airports Hongqiao (SHA) for domestic, Pudong (PVG) mostly international
Door to door Typically 5–7 hours once transfers and airport time are included

Two hours in the air becomes much longer in practice. You need to get to an airport that may be 45–60 minutes from the centre, check in and clear security (allow 90 minutes for domestic flights), land, then transfer from the airport into town — another 30–60 minutes.

Flight prices vary enormously with timing and how far ahead you book. Booked early, a flight can undercut a first-class train ticket; booked late, it can be several times the price of second class.

Side-by-Side Comparison

Factor High-speed rail Flight

Time at terminal 40–60 minutes 90–120 minutes
Reliability Extremely punctual Subject to delays and weather
Baggage No meaningful limit, no fees Allowance and fees apply
Comfort Spacious, walk around, hot water, sockets Cramped, but shorter
Cost Predictable, rises with class Wildly variable

When to Fly Instead

  • You are connecting to an international flight. If you are flying out of Shanghai’s Pudong airport, flying into Pudong directly avoids a cross-city transfer.
  • You need a specific time slot that the train cannot match.
  • The fare is genuinely much cheaper — which happens on some off-peak departures booked well in advance.
  • You are starting or ending near an airport rather than the city centre, which changes the transfer maths entirely.

Practical Booking Notes

  • Your passport is your train ticket. Scan it at the gate. No paper ticket needed or issued in most cases.
  • Beijing South vs Beijing Capital: double-check which station your train leaves from. Beijing has several major stations, and they are far apart.
  • Shanghai Hongqiao vs Shanghai Station: most Beijing–Shanghai high-speed services use Hongqiao, but confirm on your booking.
  • Book around public holidays early. Both trains and flights on this route sell out weeks ahead during Chinese New Year and October Golden Week.
  • Second class is fine. Unless you particularly want extra space, first class is a substantial premium for a journey this short.

Our recommendation: take a morning high-speed train from Beijing South. You leave the centre of one city and arrive in the centre of the other in time for a late lunch, with a fraction of the airport hassle — and it is one of the great rail journeys in the world.
